Celebrate Family Caregiver Week in BC
May 10 - 16, 2008

Supporting Family Caregivers in the Workplace

A seminar for employers, human resource professionals and business owners.

Of the over 60,000 family caregivers in the CRD who are providing care for an adult family member approximately 70% are also trying to balance the demands of caregiving and employment. The pressures on these employees can directly impact the workplace through higher absenteeism, lateness, lower productivity and higher rates of employee turnover.

Employers today realize that having a flexible workplace is a critical component in recruitment and retention of good employees. Join others from the business community to explore practices that employers can adopt to support employees who are juggling work and caregiving roles and learn from organizations who have already successfully implemented these practices.

Safe Medicines for Seniors: A Workshop for Family Caregivers
The safe and responsible use of medicine is important to everyone and is of particular concern to seniors. Seniors receive between 28 – 40% of all medications prescribed and many seniors are taking several kinds of prescription and non-prescription medicine at the same time. Family caregivers often find themselves helping with medicines, administering them, picking up prescriptions and monitoring schedules.

In this workshop, family caregivers will learn what they can do toward ensuring the safe use of medicine by the senior for whom they are caring. Topics will include information on medicine such as side effects, mistakes with or misuse of medicine, and common problems taking medicine along with solutions and aids to help with administration and monitoring.
