today's date: May 9th, 2008 Witness to Illness: Strategies for Caregiving and Coping By: Karen E. Horowitz & Douglas M. Lanes Published by: Addison-Wesley Publishing Company ISBN: 0-201-56796-2 Date: 1992 This is a book for those of us who must, at some time in our lives, witness the illness of a significant other - a husband, wife, mother, father, sister, brother or other family member or friend - someone who is more than a statistic. This book speaks to our feelings of helplessness and perhaps hopelessness, our frustration that we are unable to do anything to restore health to an ailing loved one. Horowitz, a writer who has "been there", and Lanes, a psychiatrist who works with the critically ill, show us that we don't have to be passive. The book follows the course of events in a typical illness - from handling the initial bad news, through caregiving, to the long-term effects of the illness, and suggests specific practical ways in which we can actively contribute to the survival and well-being of the patient.
This book comes highly recommended by one of our family caregivers who read it recently on the suggestion of one of our workshop facilitators.
